HOW TO REGISTER A BUSINESS NAME IN CAC IN NIGERIA

The days have gone when we always say that registration of business doesn't matter. Today it is very important that every business is registered for full operation without any interruption and for the chances of getting a bigger and better contract or business engagement.

In this post we are going to show you the steps to take in registering your business name in Nigeria.

Note: This post is meant for Business name only. We are going to show you the steps on how to register Limited Liability Company in our next post.

Follow the steps below to register your business name:

1.  Search for availability of name:
  • The first step in registering a business name is to first of all search for the availability of the Name you want to use as your business name; For example you want to use "KANKA ENTERPRISES" as your business name, you need to search for the availability to make sure that another person has not registered it because a name cannot be registered twice.
  • Tips: You have chances of entering two names, if the first is registered, the second will be approved if available.

2.  Submit the duly completed statutory forms with two passport sized photographs of each applicant attached to the form:
  • After searching for the Business name you want to use and it is approved, then you now proceed to Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) to obtain statutory form which you will fill and submit back to the CAC office with two passports.

3.  Pay filing fees at the Corporate Affairs Commission:
  • You are meant to pay some amount of money which includes Form Fee and Certificate Fee.
4.  Submit an application form:
  • During submission of the statutory form, you are meant to fill an application form where you clearly state the name of the business.
5.  Wait for your Certificate to come out:
  • After submitting all the necessary forms and making every necessary payment, then you have to wait for your application to be processed. This process always takes at least two weeks. If no error is found in your application during this process, a Certificate Of Registration will be issued to you.
Note: Individual/Proprietors can register business names without the services of the legal practitioner, chartered Accountant or Chartered Secretary.
